This should be an easy one but I'm stumped.
I've ran TM for years on a Win98 machine and changed tank speeds with no problem. I built a new one with XP and a fresh download from LDA and whatever I do, the tank speed , acceleration, etc. never changes. I believe I am doing it the way I did before:
C:\Program Files\Tread Marks\entities\RaceTank and then the .ent file for the tank. I open it with notepad and modify and save and it doesn't change a thing. Am I doing this right?

Hi,

Since you didn't say whether you were playing online or not, I will assume you are playing locally.

There used to be a link on the old site to an ent file name sabot.ent that dealt with friction that by default is located in the %TMInstall%\entitities\tankgod directory. I don't remember what the differences were in the stock file vs. the posted one but I'm sure there is a reason why it used to be posted.

If you are talking about onlne, you are at the mercy of the server host.

Also, each map has its own gravity settings which, if you are better versed in TM than I am you should also be able to adjust.

It sounds like you have a handle on the tank entities but are to be sure are you modifying both the maxspeed and accelspeed settings in the specific ent files you are tweaking?

I hope this helps but it looks like LDA forgot to put that file in its downloads for TM.

Found it [url]http://www.ldagames.com/treadmarks/mods/</a>

If you have the Full version of the game, copy the file into the "AddOns\Entities\" directory in your Tread Marks folder. If you have the Shareware Demo, copy the file into the "Entities\TankGod\" folder, overwriting the old file there.

I am playing locally.

I know the sabot file you're talking about but I have never modified it.

I only modified the tank file and yes, I did change max speed and acceleration and also pea shooter frequency and turret speed.

I never had to change the gravity settings in the maps either.

Just changing the tank file always got my desired results.

Thanks for your input.

I hate windows XP :x

idle thought. you might want to check that the file is save with the correct extension. that notepad did not tack an additional .txt on the end of the file name(ex. 'tank9.ent.txt' instead of 'tank9.ent')

The file is saved with the correct .ent extention.
I use notepad to edit but don't associate any program to ent files when I'm done.
I've changed several tanks settings to no avail.

I'd guess that the "type" feild is wrong, it should be exactly the same as the file name without the .ent extension.

OK, let us back up; below is the stock speed and turret setting for tank18

#meters per second.
### Tweak max speed and acceleration settings to taste! ###
maxspeed = 50
#accelspeed = 15.0
accelspeed = 20.0

turretspeed = 60.0
#degrees per second turret rotation.

please to insert your modifications in your reply for comparison.

I'm guessing that you may have left out a space or something. Either way, if we could see what you have done, we might better assist you.

Often, a seocnd pair of eyes is all that is need to point out a simple mistake.

Tank type is correct.

Here is example with changes. Spaces were kept exactly where they were.

#meters per second.
### Tweak max speed and acceleration settings to taste! ###
maxspeed = 125
#accelspeed = 15.0 (I do not have this line in my file)
accelspeed = 30.0

turretspeed = 75.0
#degrees per second turret rotation.

I have even changed the stock tank extention so the game doesn't recognize it and put the edited file in the Add Ons folder and also have just changed the stock tank without putting an edited one in the Add Ons.

# lines are comments - so that missing line isn't a problem.

I was hoping to see a cut and past so that I could check for spaces missing.

Exactly - we need the whole file rather than just a part of it. There could be other issues that affect it.

something as simple as 'Name = Talon'.

Bah, there's nothing wrong with it, it's invincible! :evil:

But this is something I noticed about all the files in the game:

"#Format is <parameter><whitespace>["="]<value>. "

Should surely be:

"#Format is <parameter><whitespace>["="]<whitespace><value>. "

well after doing a copy/paste of my own...did a quick check got something like 14 errors(don't know how many were inflicted by the copy/paste) but, you might do well to check for trailing spaces (spaces after the value)
edit: update
after pulling all the trailing spaces(where ever they came from(I suspect mostly from the bbs)) I found no errors. tried it out, ran fine...tried it on 'in the ring' tank got thrown off the track(airborn) somewhere around 270 mph :) you might consider increasing the gravity, the friction, or both. I couldn't hold it down at speed.

Yes, I should be flying into :shock: space :shock: with those settings. They are a little exaggerated than I was running on my old machine.

Lol, the ring is where I tested my "wraith", but it wasn't that fast! :lol:
