What are markets for?

Can someone explain the role of markets? In the manual, it's written that markets can be connected to mines.... When a city is connected to a mine, is its market also connected to it?

Yep; connect a city to a mine and then look closely at where the road touches the city. You'll notice that each road ends at a market. So the number of trade routes you can connect to a city is limited by the number of market nodes and docks.
