I might be able to help, although that is going to take a little while as i have yet to get the game(in the next week or so). I currently run a 9600GT on my XP gaming rig(the Demo runs fine btw), but i had a 7600GT before and still have the card. I can refit the old card and run some tests and see if i get anything like the problem described here, but like i say it wont be for a week or two.

Keep in mind the latest drivers for Nvidia are not always the best solution, especially if using older cards. I used to run my 7600GT on old 84. or early 90. version drivers as they ran games smoother and with better fps and less issues. Those were drivers that came out around the same time as the 7600GT.

Hi Zak, thanks for helping. Your suggestion about older drivers was spot on. I'd been using 197.13, and also updated to 197.45. After I saw your post I installed an old set I had on my hard drive (169.21) and there was a definite improvement.

I still got a few freezes but they only lasted a few seconds, as opposed to hanging the machine so bad that I had to reboot. Most interesting was the fact that all of the freezes happened in exactly one spot on the map (the hill between the cities in the western most part of the revealed map just before the demo ends). Plus, it froze every single time I moved the camera back over that spot. After about a dozen passes the game crashed with this message: "GK2Exception - an error occurred while attempting to draw the screen"

I'll email the dump file from the crash and try running the game a bit longer when I have more time to see if there are any more freezes.

EDIT: After starting a new game from the beginning and playing for about half an hour I had 1 CTD, and 1 freeze that I had to reboot to get out of, which is an improvement over the way it was with the newer drivers.

Hmm, that is interesting. Thanks for updating us. Rob's looking into trying to reproduce this bug as I type.

The dump file that I received showed directx was returning a 'notavailable' error when trying to update the screen. Unfortunately, I've not been able to reproduce this on the hardware we've got or found much information on the web. In the version rick posted last night (1.1.0) the game will try to reset the video card when it's gets this error so let me know if that makes any difference.
