For those of you who remember my son ramTHIS from TM back a year or two, he's about to graduate from college.

We learned today that he'll be graduated magna cum laude.

Sweet!

Makes a Dad proud!!

My congratulations to your son!

Good Job

Latin honors are Latin phrases used to indicate the level of academic distinction with which an academic degree was earned.

There are typically three types of Latin honors. In order of increasing level of honor, they are:

cum laude ("with honor")

magna cum laude ("with great honor")

summa cum laude ("with highest honor")

They are awarded to those undergraduate and graduate students who have achieved academic distinction. The honor is typically indicated on the diploma.

Generally, a college or university's degree regulations give clear rules for the minimum grades necessary to obtain specific honors distinctions.

While the use of Latin honors for undergraduate degrees is generally limited to Anglo-American academia, their use with doctorate degrees is common world-wide. E.g. the Netherlands use a one-class Latin honors system at least for the Master's diplomas. The British bachelor's degree classification is a different scheme, widely used (with some variation) in UK, Ireland and Hong Kong.

M8,

It means that in spite of the beer bashes, exstasy and lipstick parties, his son managed not only to pass but pass in a way to make other parents envious.

Congratulations to you and your son Synack.

Umm, so whats the deal with giving houses latin names too ... "Delta Ro Sigma" for example ? are these made up or set for each campus or uni ? While i was at school we had 4 houses, but named after birds.... and not physical houses at all, just a group you belonged to....

Whats the deal with using latin anyway ?

WIERD .. sounds the part tho !!

BAILIFF - VALLIUM !!!

lol. Latin is the source of most modern words... I think latin has the most exact meaning to what is that you're trying to say; it has been studied by scholars to find the meanings of meanings. In other words, it just sounds cool

pablito,

I believe it varies, depending on the university. At the college my son attends, the honors are awarded as follows ...

Graduation Honors:
cum laude 3.25-3.49 GPA
magna cum laude 3.50-3.74
summa cum laude 3.75-4.00

It's official. ramTHIS has been graduated!

A lovely time was had by all. Lots of family in attendance at the commencement. Over 1200 graduates this year.

Took everyone out for dinner afterwards, and we're all stuffed. Typing this message from his college apartment as he works on packing up a bunch of his stuff to take home.

Ah now ... real life begins!
