Right. It works on both. It seems, from my limited experience, to actually matter on 98.IP: |

While you're ducking Matrix, take a look at my 'puter. It IS 100% stable. In the year I've had it (the longest I've ever had the same hardware configuration) it's never crashed, spontaneously rebooted or given me the blue screen of death. Want even more confounding news? It's a Dell (PowerEdge 400SC). Yeah, I can hear the screams of pain too. The thought of owning a Dell was unthinkable for me - well, until I did it. The registry hack never seemed to make any difference on this box with XP as it did on my 98 rig. But then I made only very rough measures of network performance. Even if LDA has XP, very slight improvements would mean a lot more to them (and probably to you as well) than to me.IP: |

So you never run out of resources, you are never compelled to reboot if it gets slow... theres no way it could be compromised in terms of spyware or viri, it removes every file that gets installed with every program you install without asking "what you think about this critical .dll file", Youve never had to reset the monitor frequency, had a conflict between soundcard and video card, never had a crashed program, dont feel the need for service packs or hotfixes, see no reason to run tweek programs or novelty items that enhance the way desktop works, never had an active-desktop crash (98), never had to reinstall drivers for a video card, soundcard, USB device or found that theres certain webcams and games that run on 98 that will NOT work under XP...Im impressed, treasure it, its one in a few trillion, and prolly worth a bundle To be fair though, DELL machines are very good, its just the proprietory stuff they stick inside, like "the motherboard" or "the bios" ... if anything dies it costs a fortune to put right because its stuff you just cant buy in shops or get a local comp tech to fix. As an example, you may discover one morning you need a new power supply, go out to buy one, then get home to discover it doesnt fit in the twisty-outy carriage thing (assuming its the same design caddy as the old P2 Optiplex GX1 case); if you buy one from DELL, itll fit - but maybe perhaps 3x more expensive. HP do that too, drives me nuts. If on the other hand you never get any crashes because you dont install anything, other than maybe TM, then id say thats a waste of a good pc. But to have NO PROBLEMS at ALL - is close to unheard of... however stable is it is / or may be. (edit) Spyware / trojans is usually to blame for registry problems, they change the MTU setting invisibly.. your compy seems to get slower, they may even hijack your bandwidth to send out spam from your pc, never hurts to tweek your MTU m8, because its forever changing, and not always for the better... MS's default settings on 98 (assuming youre on a 56k modem) do not allow a full 56k connection (thats a theoretical maximum) - in your registry, theres a channel for each 10k (roughly), giving you 5 or 6 channels, MS's default setting is to dedicate 3 to downloading, the other 1 or 2 (depending on OS version and driver) are for upload only... what registry hacks do, isnt increase your bandwidth, they mark those extra 2 channels for up AND down use rather than exclusively UP. Thats is why ppl apply them, it seemingly gives them a boost, its not, what its really doing is allowing more data to flow better through the available channels. The reason you notice it more on 98 than XP, is because 98 sucked, plus it was full of memory holes, for XP, the whole TCP protocol was rewritten, and the data handling is more efficient, much more, but it can still be tweeked for better performance without compromising stability. Compression tools like GZIP are cool too and can add a BOOST to your transfer, then theres the method of transmission, have a look at the ONSPEED program which was developed by the government, and the reason forums with GZIP move at lightning speed.... look at progs like DOWNLOAD ACCELLERATOR, which utilize all the available channels for downloads and bypass the default MS settings. Try Dr Solomons, you even have one click options for optimum settings based on the kind of connection you have, cable, dsl, 56k, t3 etc etc .... (thas win 98 btw but works under xp too, and its one of the tools i use) You can go even further... With the right set of tweeks and tools, you can have a lightning fast system, whatever the os youre running; of course, spyware sweepers and virus killers all help... as does a good firewall. Hope that helps ps: ya may want to close port 139 m8 bad one that, spyware and trojans LOVE IT ! mainly because even the XP service pack 2 doesnt touch it, it hosts things like file and printer sharring and even XP's built in firewall wont close it be default (do we feel like we have a stable system yet ?)... Net result, MS is all about looks and functionality - it may LOOK great and ACT great, but is it, and is it really as safe and stable as you think.... Food for thought...... i keep coming back and adding so id better stop b4 i overload you with data lol .... still, just because your system is running smooth and "100% stable" dont assume everything is ok.

Wow. What a litany. You said "100% stable and setup as it should be". That my 'puter is. And I was referring to XP only. The rest? None of it is an issue for me. But I am not the power user that you are. I run financial software, play TM, play a little music, do a few other miscellaneous things and browse. If that's wasting a PC then I shall happily waste away.As far as security goes, I sit behind a home router which takes care of some of it. I run GRC's free little proggys which may fill in some gaps. AND... perhaps the most important measure of all is I avoid "alternative sources of free entertainment" if you know what I mean. Certain relatives I know have gotten a plague's worth of viruses from their illicit habits. They say sharing is caring, but it isn't always so. Anyway, this shouldn't degrade into a defacto MS sucks debate. Prior to my current config it was as you say. Back in the day I was a real pro at reinstalling Windows 98. About every four to six weeks I had to do it. Ah... memories of Windows 98. The current lack of problems has made computing almost sterile - like going to an ATM machine to withdraw money. lol IP: |

I dont need to point out MS's flaws lol .... hey wanna know how to hack an ATM ? lol"I shall happily waste away" - *snicker* gotta love the irony there lol .... No but seriously, you buy a pc setup according to your tastes, and uses - sounds like you have the right setup for you... as it should be. Power User though, whats so powerful about photoshop, thats prolly the most powerful thing i use... no video editing here - now THAT needs a serious pc.... This bag-o-nuts is just an ancient 1 gig athlon, way behind by todays standards... its far from perfect, but its secure, and it does what i need it to with a minimal of fuss (unless you count overheating in the summer) lol .... Lag isn't an issue and I'm dial-up. Please don't change the setup. Thank you.------------------ Tread Marks Ladders

For me, I have a computer that runs smoothly, not perfectly. I am an update FREAK! lol. I use a nVidia GeForce FX 5200 Graphics card, 1GB DDR SDRAM 2700, an AMD Athlon +3000 processor, use Symantec Norton Internet Security 2005, have Spybot Search & Destroy, Ad-Aware SE Personal, Spyware Blaster, Mozilla Firefox 1.0 (as the default browser), Windows XP SP2, Update patches: KB834707, KB873339, KB886185, KB885835, KB885836, and KB887797, Have RB, RBT, TM, Microsoft Office 2003 SP1, a webcam, a printer (hp), Microsoft Baseline Security Analyzer 1.2.1, use a 56k modem (that seems to operate at 33.6k), etc... the list could go on, and all of it is on a hp model pavillion a296n. I probably have a decent computer that works fine, and that's what counts. I think I just told you nearly everything I have in my computer, lol. I get a bit of lag in the connection here and there, but what do you expect from a modem? lol... ------------------ FISH!!! Firefox 1.0 Rocks!!! IP: |
