Recently got a new computer with the above operating system. Everything seems to run slower and I am wondering if anyone can help with info on what bs background programs/services I can safely remove or turn on. Thanks

on the left side, under features, click Windows XP services. The right frame will change to a list of XP services and different configurations. Disable all the services listed as disabled under the "safe" configuration. It's the same setup I run.

If you are unsure about something, clicking on the name of the service will tell you more about it.

EDIT: Make sure you make the changes by running "services.msc" from the run box.

Check in add/remove programs in the control panel and see if you have Windows XP Hotfix Q811493 installed. If you do remove it and the system speed will return to normal. This is a fix that has caused problems in XP with numerous programs running slower after install. It is not a required fix just recommended. Not likely to be affected with it removed. That is what MicroSoft recommended I do to resolve the problem. A fixing patch will be released eventually. Oh yes - it did return the system to a much speedier state once removed.
