I am thinking about upgrading some of my hardware.

CD ROM, got to since this one is only borrowed.

Vid Card, AGP I am not sure 2x or 4x, also opinions on what to get would be appreciated.

RAM?? 133 compatible.

LiteOn cdroms always rate well. Though if you don't have one, you may as well get a DVD player for a few bucks more: http://www.newegg.com/app/Showimage.asp?image=27-131-112-04.JPG/27-131-112-03.JPG

That's the 166, here's a review of the 163: http://www.cdrinfo.com/Sections/Articles/Specific.asp?ArticleHeadline=DVD%2DRom+Roundup+Vol1&Series=0&index=5

Can't comment on PC133 memory. I haven't used such old stuff in a long time. Just be sure to get quality stuff.

Guess I'll have to be the dumb guy and ask all the dumb questions...

Make/model of yer mobo?
How much are you looking to spend?
How good is the cooling in yer box?
[s]Do I get a commission?[/s]

I really like the slot DVD drives more than the tray types. Of course you do get to watch DVDs with it for the extra cost over a CDROM drive...

Most modern video cards are 4x so I wouldn't worry about trying to get a 2x card. I guess it all depends on yer AGP port speed that yer mobo supports.

PC133 RAM is pretty cheap these days. I only use Crucial brand memory as I've never had any problems with their stuff and they have a lifetime warranty on the stuff, too!

Like Irascible said, NewEgg is a great company to get stuff from. It's where I get all of my stuff from...

They cost a little more, but they're the best memory you can buy.

I would still go to Tom's Hardware site to do the research. I went with the 8500 ATI video card versus the 9000's ones because the data for the high end ones was not good. Also, Tom's Hardware is a true 3rd party look at hardware.

do they still make 2x cards? mine is 8x! running on what i think is a 4x moboard too... need to change that so hopefully battlield 1942 will work. i have had my computer since 09/01, did they even make AGP 8X motherboards back then?

i reccomend something on the higer end side, but not the highest. i got the best vid card money could buy but really shouldnt have, i'm just a sucker for having the best stuff, before anyone else has it

while we're on the subject, i will bring my monitor question back. check here /forums/archive/ubb/Forum2/HTML/003075.html can i get something that i can plug component cables directly into (viewable screen size preferably >18")

Scrap, yes you can still get them. The Radeon 7000 and 7500 are both either 2x or 4x, and I can get them from Comp USA.

BZP, I have not been able to find out what the mobo is on this thing since the get go, and while I would love to change this one out I am afraid that would be more than I want to spend.

Ras, I'm stuck with 133, the it was fairly new stuff when I built this thing.

I may not upgrade the RAM, I do have 256 mb of it, so it is not as though I am borderline for most things.

I couldn't get it to download. I built this 'puter (AMD 900 MGHZ K7) from a bare bones set up, if that helps so much the better.

What do you guys know about the Radeon 9000 or 9100?

Yo Cyber...it like no listen to me. Go to Tom's Hardware and do the research. I decided buy the 8500 ATI and not the 9000's because the data was not good for them. The link is here http://www.tomshardware.com/

BZP, got it and it told me a lot. Unfortunately it still didn't tell me what type of Mobo I have.

Cyber,

Create and send me a report. Only send the information modules and deselect the benchmarking and listing modules. Everything else should be default. Email to my address. Thanks!!

I have the ATI Radeon 9000, and it kicks butt. I have had no problems with it whatsoever, and it was $63 for the 64M DDR card with TV and DVI out.
That's a pretty good buy.
~85 fps at 800x600 with most of the detail turned up on a Tbird 1400.
