Hey I got a stock server set up at my office and I came home to try it out. (called Throck and Roll) What the hell?
My pings stink.
Is there anything I can do or should I blame my TimeWarner Roadrunner Cable account?

Cable is run through a router that is hooked up to my three computer network.

Any suggestions? Or is it my stupid cable modem company's connection?

(I live in the middle of nowhere so I don't imagine that I am suffering from "Too many cable-modem accounts clogging the line" problems.

I have a linksys BEFSR11 router, which says it has/is a firewall, but I'm a dentist so what do I know about this crap?

crazy dentists! lol.

who setup your router? I've run servers at home on time warner cable but used ZONEALARM software based firewall.

My computer gurus are Westar Computing in Rochester NY.
But i set up the router last night myself. All I had to do was "forward" ports as specified in "dedicated.cfg" (the TM config file that comes with the game)
There must be some other firewall commands or something I need to do, but i'm too busy to RTFM.

hey throck, I have linksys to but I can't have a sever. Your thing does have a firewall, but strangly it allows people to see your IP address.

If it doesn't do NAT, that's ok, NeoKi.

Throckmorton->I'm not a firewall specialist myself, but maybe the thing does some sort of packet filtering even on forwarded ports - it might be possible to turn that off for the specified ports.

I just checked. I used a good flashlight. I don't see monkeys flying out of my butt. So sorry, no telnet access.

Super: thanks for the greeting. I played demo for MONTHS before I finally figured out I enjoyed TM more than the games I was paying for at the store. So I said DUH 17 times or so and bought TM.
What a difference! CTF Rules! It's ten times better than the demo game that I loved.

Now i spend a little time each session playing on the demo just to tell new people to buy the game and enjoy the REAL action.

About the Linksys: I set it up again tonight (SEPT 5) and will tweak it awhile (before giving up)...

LOL - good one.

Anyways welcome to TM and we'll all definately try to help you. The ability to have more servers running the better.

This is the only game I play and the community is great.

Hey I changed nothing but my server played well last night (sept 5 pm USA east coast).

Its on now (8pm east coast) and will run all night. If anyone notices their pings swinging from good to 2000 and back, then let me know. It will probably mean that the problem was (or still is) just the traffic patterns of my cable modem supplier.
Post here also if you played on "Throck and Roll" and it worked fine. Give the time of day to help me determine network/cable traffic patterns.

The server will only run from about 6pm east coast USA to 8am.

I just played two games on it against a couple of real folks (7-8 pm) and it worked great. Not a stutter.

I'm on cable too, which always helps.
