Check out http://java.sun.com

You can download the jdk from there.

VisualAge for Java is a free (limited to a certain number of classes) IDE from IBM. Get it here: http://www7.software.ibm.com/vad.nsf/FrameData/Master?OpenDocument&FSet=1&Doc3=3809&Title=Overview&DPart=Overview&Doc4=3810
or here: http://www7.software.ibm.com/vad.nsf/(WebDLProductIndex)?openview&Count=500&TargetFrame=webdlproductindex

how would you open a file using jre? When i try to open jre.exe, it opens a dos prompt and then closes it before i can do anything.

If its doing a dos prompt try running it from a dos screen window rather than from windows...you probably have to pass options onto it...try /? or /help - those are often used but not always...

Try java -classpath "C:\root\of\javafile"dir.of.your.class.file

Example:

To run a JAVA program named AwtBlueGreenGem.class in the "C:\VADD Code\com\ibm\ivj\examples\awtests" directory, at a dos prompt, type:

java -classpath "C:\VAD Code"com.ibm.ivj.examples.awtests.AwtBlueGreenGem

To assure that you have the jre installed at all, type java -version from a C:\ porompt.

Hope this helps.
