Hegemony Rome First Screenshots

By rob,

It's a busy news day here at Longbow. To followup on Rick's interview with RTS Guru we're excited to finally have the first official screenshots of Hegemony Rome.

The sampling we've got today shows off some of the variety in the terrain from the curving Seine river to the marshlands of the Thames and the dark forests of Germania that the Romans's called the Silva Nigra. If you look closely you can also see some of the new details like the legionnaires on the walls of the Roman city in southern Gaul.

This is just small preview today. We've been trying to fit some PR time into our dev schedule so stay tuned for more screenshots, videos and interviews in the comings weeks and months. Continued →

Rick talks Hegemony Rome with RTS Guru

By rob,

Check out this great interview with Rick over at RTS Guru. Rick's got his designer/writer hat on and discusses what makes Hegemony unique and how the series continues to evolve in the upcoming Hegemony Rome. Here's an excerpt:

"It’s really incredible how much more detail there is in the environments now. As you explore the world you’ll find that each area has a distinct look and feel, as we’ve made different buildings for each faction. We’ve even made unique models for landmarks, so you’ll be able to discover the White Cliffs of Dover, or Stonehenge."

Happy Halloween! Get a great deal on Hegemony!

By Rick,

So we all came into the office today, dressed in our Halloween costumes of course (click the photo to embiggen), and we were met with a pleasant surprise: Hegemony: Philip of Macedon is currently the daily deal on Steam. Until 12 PM EST you can get it for 66% off.

In a serendipitous coincidence, we also have a deal here! Enter the coupon code 'ROME' and get 25% off anything on this site, from DX-Ball 2 to the Hegemony Gold upgrade. Combined with the Steam sale, that's the perfect way to get Hegemony Gold at a great price!

The ROME code expires November 1st at 11:59 PM EST, which gives you just over a day to take advantage of it. We announced the deal nearly a week ago to our newsletter subscribers, so if you'd like to be the first to know about deals like this, be sure to subscribe to our newsletter.

Live from New York, it's Hegemony Rome!

By Rick,

We're here at New York Comic Con and we're excited to announce our next game: Hegemony Rome: The Rise of Caesar. The new game is all about Caesar's conquest of Gaul, where Rome's most famous citizen first made a real name for himself. Check out the webpage, the teaser trailer, and don't forget to sign up for our newsletter, follow our Tweets, and like us on Facebook.

And for anybody in the New York area, come visit New York Comic Con and visit our booth in the centre hall, booth #1847. We've got a great deal on Hegemony Gold, we're giving away buttons, and we're selling Hegemony Rome shirts.

Here's a few features from the new game to whet your apettite:

* New Larger Map that covers a million square miles from the shores of Britain to the beaches of the Mediterranean. The new graphics engine renders this territory in amazing detail, using SpeedTree technology to capture the wild lands of Gaul, with foreboding forests and mighty rivers.
* Build Your Empire with new buildings including the famous Roman camps, forts and bridges – the feats of engineering that made Roman ingenuity as powerful a tool of conquest as Roman steel. Wood is added as a crucial resource in your economy; without it, your invasion will come to a speedy conclusion.
* Promote Your Legions as they gain experience and valuable skills, upgrading each unit with the talents they need to perform the tasks that the proconsul demands of them. Appoint governors from your followers to watch over cities and introduce Roman rule to a new province.
* Starve Your Enemies with new improvements to Hegemony's already celebrated logistics model. Protect your supply lines and plan sieges in a way that weakens any enemy foolish enough to depend only on city walls for victory.

Hegemony Gold 1.5.4 released

By Rick,

With a special surprise announcement just around the corner, we wanted to release the updates we've been working on for Hegemony Gold. The game has been pretty stable for quite a while now, so most of these changes are either minor, or fixes to rare bugs. To update, just download the demo from the Hegemony page and install it over your existing copy, and that's it! No patching or re-entering your serial code or anything.

Full details after the jump. Continued →

Developer Interview & NYCC

By rob,

If you haven't been watching our YouTube channel, we posted a new video this weekend. It's a developer interview with me talking about some of the features of Hegemony Gold and what makes it unique from some of the other strategy games out there. We're thinking about doing more of these in the future so leave us a comment if you think it's interesting or if you have any ideas for future topics.

We're also going to be heading to New York ComicCon next week for the last stop on this year's convention tour. There will be all the usual things at the show: free buttons, big Hegemony discounts, as well as a few new surprises so stayed tuned here for more information.

Hegemony Gold gets 93% from Armchair General

By rob,

Armchair General just posted a review of Hegemony Gold and it seems they like it:

"Satisfying period battles with flexible unit formation, and a clever logistics systems make this a must-play for RTS and board gamers alike."

In other news, you may have noticed the new 'Newsletter' button in the menu on the right. With the official announcement of our next project rapidly approaching we've resurrected the old Longbow newsletter last seen around 2004. Signup to get the latest news on new releases, special offers, open betas, developer commentaries and more. If you like to get your news the second it's announced you can also check us out on Facebook or Twitter.

Hegemony vs Shakespeare

By rob,

From the latest PC Gamer (Nov 2011):

"... This is emblematic of what Longbow gets so right with Hegemony: difficulty and depth can arise naturally as simple systems begin to operate on a larger scale, and the number of interactions multiplies. A no-brainer decision when you have one army and only two or three cities becomes Hamlet in five acts when you have an empire to run."

This is probably the first and only time Hegemony gets compared to Shakespeare so check out the preview here or if you've still got a bookstore nearby drop in and grab a copy.

Painting demo with commentary

By Rick,

You may recall we recently attended the FanExpo convention here in Toronto. You may even have seen the video we posted of our experience there. Well, we have even more for you now! During FanExpo, our 2D artist, Britt, painted a depiction of a pair of Spartan and Athenian hoplites in battle, which you can see to the right (click to enlarge).

She's also been kind enough to record the process of creating this painting, along with a commentary track explaining how she works, and you can see that on YouTube or Facebook. Remember to like, subscribe, favourite, and comment!

You might also have noticed that the Hegemony page has had a little bit of a touch-up, making it easier to browse through videos, screenshots, and reviews. Let us know what you think!

Fan Expo Wrap-Up

By rob,

Fan Expo is over for another year and if you've been following the coverage or were lucky enough to attend in person (because you weren't at that other gaming show this weekend) you'll probably agree this may have been the best year yet. The show floor was huge and the crowds were enormous but I'll give props to the organizers that everything seemed to go very smoothly and I'm happy to say none of us got locked out by the fire marshall this time and it only took me 10 minutes to get my family in versus almost three hours last year.

As our friends over at Toronto Thumbs point out, the gaming presence at the show was far more impressive than previous years with huge booths by Ubisoft, Microsoft, Sony, Nintendo and more. And if Uncharted 3 or Assassings Creed: Revelations aren't your thing, Philippe also found some retro gaming goodness in one of the side rooms and caught up on some original Lemmings on an Amiga.

If you couldn't make it to the show we've got a short video (YouTube or Facebook) as well as some pics showing our booth and the awesome array of cosplay at the show. Britt was also working on a new painting demo (this time with full video capture) that we'll be posting soon and we gave a handful of interviews during the show which I'll post here as they come in.

Update #1: Weird Review just posted their coverage of Fan Expo along with a fairly detailed walkthough of Hegemony hosted by Rick.

Update #2: Our friends at Two Guys Talking just posted their interview with me from Fan Expo and if you missed it before the show, they also have a review posted on the original game.

Philippe also gave an interview during the show but unfortunately we didn't catch who they were so if anybody spots it on the web let us know and we'll get it posted. In somewhat unrelated news, the Syndey Morning Herald just posted a new review of what they call "... one of the neatest little strategy games to be released in the last 12 months."
