Hi Rick welcome to the forums. I still would go with smf rather than phpBB. Just my 2 cents from years of internet bulletin board management.

Heh, too late. I've already installed phpBB and written some code to customize it. Plus, I'm already familiar with moderating phpBB.

Hey Jim and Rick - I see I'm a bit late on this but one neat feature about vB (vBulletin) over PHPBB and SMF is that vB allows you to directly import an existing UBB forum, including all users. No clue how it is from the admin end, but from what I understand it isn't bad.

Biggest issue I've found with PHPBB is that when you get too many smilies it tends to crash the admin panel (well...we had over 1000 smiles on that PHPBB...but still ).

------------

As for the new game, count me in a a beta tester if you would! I'd love to try it out. Looks great!

Is it going to be easily mod-able? I "might" be willing to add on a site for your new game to my existing TM site. (Given that I'm working part time {PHP development} plus writing fantasy novels the rest of the time I don't know when I'd do it. Current novel is getting closer to being "done" - at 70,000 words with about 30,000 left to write, and I've edited about 45,000 words of it to near-final state; a 400 page novel is about 100,000 words. Then I still have to sell it )

We're planning on leaving these forums as an archive. I could write a script to import all the old posts into the new forums pretty easily (UBB stores everything in text files, ha!) but we liked the prospect of starting fresh.

As far as vBulletin goes: I've never administered one myself, but that's what the IGDA uses for their forums and as a user I find some of the eccentricities a bit annoying (the quote tags come to mind). Granted the version of vBulletin that the IGDA uses is old, so that may not be a fair judgement. But I've already been writing code to work with phpBB, so this is all moot anyway >:)

Referring to your last post: Do you have a tag there to disable smilies??

Or you can put images in your sig with a little hand-waving.

You can't make the evil smiley if smilies are enabled, cuz it'll only read the colon and the parenthesis and then load the graphics for it:

Coax, how did you get a pic in your sig? I thought that function was disabled at this board...

Skull Man is wrong :p

>:) >:)

(Edit: trying to make it work. Rick's method fails unless you turn off smilies.)
